Startup residency or accelerator: how to choose

A startup residency organizes shared time and work in a common environment. An accelerator usually structures a development journey with defined objectives and duration. The formats can overlap. The choice depends on the company's stage, the support offered and the conditions of participation.

What is a startup residency?

A residency is a format in which founders spend time together and build their businesses in the same environment. That proximity creates opportunities to compare experiences, ask for help and follow other teams' work. Programming, duration and access to specialists vary between initiatives.

The name alone does not tell you what is included. Confirm whether the proposal provides only workspace, attendance on specific days or accommodation. Also ask how the community is formed and which activities are part of the routine.

What is the difference between a residency and an accelerator?

Acceleration programs can bring together training, mentoring, business connections and investment preparation. Some invest or take equity; others have different models. A residency can also combine some of these resources. That is why comparing only the names leaves out the conditions that actually affect the startup.

  • Routine: how much time for attendance and execution does each program require?
  • Support: who works with the team, how often and with what experience?
  • Resources: which spaces, tools, specialists and activities are actually included?
  • Terms: are there fees, investment, equity requirements or exclusivity?
  • Continuity: what happens to support and community access at the end of the period?

What spending time together can add

A conversation close to the problem can reveal an experience the team did not yet know about. Another founder may show how they interviewed customers, organized a deployment or dealt with a technical difficulty. Its usefulness depends on context, availability and a willingness to share.

This does not mean every meeting produces a result or that a residency is faster than any accelerator. The team needs to set aside time to execute, test advice in its own context and assess what changed. A busy event schedule also needs to fit around the work of the business.

What to ask when the startup works with AI

Beyond discussing markets and operations, an AI startup may need support with model evaluation, data quality, usage costs and product reliability. Ask which of these areas of experience are available and in what format.

Confirm access to infrastructure, tool credits, specialists and pilot opportunities separately. The presence of a brand in the community does not mean all those resources are available to every participant. Investment also depends on its own assessment and terms.
